Monsoon road trips through the Western Ghats or the lush Nilgiri hills present some of the most breathtaking sights India has to offer. Cascading seasonal waterfalls, misty ghats, and fresh green valleys create unforgettable memories. However, wet tarmac and sudden downpours demand thorough vehicle preparation.
First, inspect your tire tread depth. Worn tires are susceptible to hydroplaning—a dangerous phenomenon where water separates the tire contact patch from the road surface, causing complete steering loss. Ensure a minimum tread depth of 3mm and verify that spare tires are fully inflated.
Second, check your wiper blades and washer fluid reservoir. Replace squeaking, streaking, or cracked rubber blades immediately, and use a hydrophobic windshield additive that repels rain beads at highway speeds.
Third, test the electrical and lighting systems. Fog lights and hazard lights must function flawlessly, while high beams should be avoided in heavy fog as they reflect light back into the driver's eyes.
Fourth, examine brake pad thickness and brake fluid moisture levels. Wet disc brakes experience a fraction of a second delay before full grip is established, meaning increasing your following distance from 3 seconds to 6 seconds on wet highways is essential.
Lastly, never drive into standing water of unknown depth. If water reaches above half of your wheel rim, turn around to prevent hydrostatic engine lock. With pre-trip diligence, your monsoon drive will be safe, smooth, and scenic.
